Weddingdesigns

Angeleno style is all about pushing the limits, and weddings should be no exception. We commissioned two of L.A.'s Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising's brightest up-and-coming designers to rethink the quintessential wedding garb, incorporating design elements that are fitting of the times. They sketched nuptial ensembles that are eco- and budget-friendly yet still demonstrate the edgy style that makes L.A. unique.

Charles Ryan Sands, who swapped the typical tuxedo pants for leggings, says, "Designing a groom's outfit for a rock 'n' roll wedding is creative freedom.... The Los Angeles music scene has no rules."

Suggested price: $84

Methods/materials used: A vintage light gray blazer is completely updated and redesigned; trendy polka dots are added with water-based inks. The organic cotton scarf is created from a large secondhand store skirt. The shirt was also from a thrift shop and is reshaped and the buttons are changed. Organic interlock leggings from a vintage shop are remade and fitted as well.

Lacey Osberg created a "Tap Short" bride. "My overall inspiration was looking at pre-owned bridal gowns online and in thrift stores," she says. "I was inspired to redesign, cut up and re-sew wedding dresses and veils."

Suggested price: $95

Methods/materials used: A vintage strapless top and long white pants were purchased online and redesigned. The purple iris-inspired petals are made from a thrift-store chiffon skirt. A veil is bought online.

Pedal Power: With pricey fuel and a recession that seemingly won’t quit, is this the time for L.A. to reach for the sort of shared-road bicycle nirvana achieved in such cities as Portland, Ore., and Boston? Bike-centric neighborhoods such as Venice and Hel-Mel (around Heliotrope Drive and Melrose Avenue) seem to indicate change is within our reach. Or are these the sort of ambitious thoughts better left to more compact cities with about half as many drivers? Tell us what you think.
