It ain't Intelligentsia, but it's free

McDonald's is giving away free coffees on Mondays from now through Aug. 3. The details: You can get one free 8-ounce mocha, hot or iced, anytime from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. That's mochas only.

Obviously, McDonald's is not a high-end coffee provider, but it's come a long way since its scalding days of 180-degree cups of joe. Its new premium coffee even won a Consumer Reports taste test in 2007, beating out other fast-coffee vendors Dunkin' Donuts, Burger King and Starbucks.

Sure, you could probably get exceedingly delicious boutique coffee at Intelligensia or maybe even Coffee Bean. But it'll cost you. And who wouldn't use a little free caffeine on Monday?

Pedal Power: With pricey fuel and a recession that seemingly won’t quit, is this the time for L.A. to reach for the sort of shared-road bicycle nirvana achieved in such cities as Portland, Ore., and Boston? Bike-centric neighborhoods such as Venice and Hel-Mel (around Heliotrope Drive and Melrose Avenue) seem to indicate change is within our reach. Or are these the sort of ambitious thoughts better left to more compact cities with about half as many drivers? Tell us what you think.
