Jack White's pop-up record store: Get in line

Jack White is coming to town!  The illustrious member of noteworthy rock bands the White Stripes and the Raconteurs was already scheduled to hit the Wiltern tonight and the Mayan on Wednesday night with his latest venture, the Dead Weather, but in between those appearances, White has set up a special treat for his fans.

Cast in a bold new paint job of school-bus yellow, downtown’s Regent Theatre is currently being turned into a pop-up record store named Third Man Records, after White’s Nashville-based record label and permanent store there.  According to White's manager, Matt Pollack, the store will house various sorts of Third Man Records merch, included limited-edition goods.  "It's an opportunity to bring his label and music to the masses," Pollack said.

And also, White himself. The raven-haired musician will be celebrating the opening with a free noon show at the store Wednesday with the Dead Weather.  It’s a first come, first served basis, and as of noon today, the line was already forming along Main Street.

Vannessa Calderon, 19, of Whittier, said she showed up last night but with no one around decided to come back this morning at 8 a.m. Clad in a yellow nearly matching the store's paint job (which corresponds with Third Man Records' primary color motif), she's the first in line.

Just after noon, however, she found company with two fellow White enthusiasts. Jack Waskiewicz, 30, of Seattle, and Christine Wood, 18, of Eugene, Ore., met each other at the Dead Weather's show in Portland, Ore., on Sunday. And Monday afternoon, they got in a van with Wood's mother (a White fan herself) and drove straight with no sleep about 17 hours (they said they were too exhausted to count anymore), driving right up to the store.

Thirdman_fan "It's his motivation," said Waskiewicz of what he admires about White.  "Even with this economy and everything, it's giving me something to look forward to."  In the past, Waskiewicz has gone as far as New York and Texas to see White perform, but he still contends, with tired, amazed eyes, that this trip was one of the craziest decisions he’s ever made.  "I mean, I got into this car with strangers!"

Even if you can’t make it into the Third Man Records’ tiny space for the Dead Weather performance on Wednesday, the store will be open until Friday, with DJ sets and, we’re assured by Third Man Records staff, a few surprises every day.

The Third Man Records temporary store is at 448 S. Main St., at the Regent Theatre, and will be open 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Wednesday and noon-8 p.m. Thursday and Friday.

We’re not sure if you’ve noticed but it’s, well, comical these days how many superhero franchises are either in the teeth of the Hollywood rumor mill or already on the way to theaters. For want of a better term, are we in danger of reaching Justice League fatigue? Eventually the bottom of the barrel has to be reached — would you buy a ticket for the inevitable “Ant Man” and “Squirrel Girl” adaptations? Let us know.
