Kronos Quartet with the L.A. Philharmonic New Music Group at Disney Hall

08:58 AM PT, Dec 1 2009

What exactly is the L.A. Philharmonic New Music Group? Think of it, affectionately, as the L.A. Phil Lite. Though fewer members perform, selections are often more daring, like tonight's program, which includes an arrangement of Frank Zappa's "The Yellow Shark," and the lauded Kronos Quartet performing Harry Partch's "U.S. Highball," described as an "individualistic hobo travelogue." Also on the musical menu is a version of Ingram Marshall's "Fog Tropes," which was composed nearly 30 years ago as an ambient brass piece mimicking the fog horns of the San Francisco Bay. Lite never tasted so good.

Walt Disney Concert Hall, 111 S. Grand Ave., Downtown; 7 p.m.; $26-$51

We’re not sure if you’ve noticed but it’s, well, comical these days how many superhero franchises are either in the teeth of the Hollywood rumor mill or already on the way to theaters. For want of a better term, are we in danger of reaching Justice League fatigue? Eventually the bottom of the barrel has to be reached — would you buy a ticket for the inevitable “Ant Man” and “Squirrel Girl” adaptations? Let us know.
